Luce Scholars Program

Overview

The Luce Scholars Program awards 18 fellowships annually to seniors and recent graduates in any field of study to take part in 1-year of professional work experience in Northeast, Southeast, or South Asia for applicants who have little to no experience in their country of placement. Scholars are placed in unique host organizations or institutions (NGOs, government agencies, private companies, think tanks, museums etc.) based on their individualized interests and qualifications.

Eligibility

  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
  • Bachelor’s degree before the start of the fellowship
  • Graduating seniors, recent graduates, or young professionals under the age of 32 or if older than 32, candidate must have received their bachelor’s degree within the past 3 years.
  • Candidates who have spent a significant amount of time (18 weeks or more since beginning college) in more than one of the countries where Luce Scholars are placed are NOT eligible.
  • Candidates who have spent 18 weeks or more (since beginning college) in only one of the countries may apply, but may not be placed in the country where they have spent significant time.

Selection Criteria

  • Leadership ability
  • Intercultural competence
  • Evidence of professional achievement (will consider academic accomplishments but Luce is experience rather than academic in nature)
  • Other important qualities: resilience, flexibility, adaptability, maturity, humility, creativity, openness to new ideas, sensitivity to cultural differences
  • Not judged on whether you have specific plans for the year in Asia

  • Personal Statement (1000 words)
  • Bio (400 words)
  • 2 academic or professional letters of recommendations
  • Transcripts
  • 1 - 2 minute video based on prompt

You are encouraged to contact the Undergraduate Fellowship Office at fellowships@osu.edu for support on your application. However, because this is a direct-apply award, you are not required to work with our office.
