DAAD RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering)

Overview

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funds paid summer STEM research experiences in Germany for sophomores and juniors from US, Canadian, and UK universities. Undergraduate students are mentored by doctoral students at Germany’s top research institutions. Internships last 2.5-3 months and no German language skills are required. RISE awardees also attend a 3-day meeting in Heidelberg in July with travel funded by DAAD RISE.

Eligibility

  • Be currently enrolled at a university/college in the United States, Canada, the UK or Ireland as an undergraduate student in a STEM field
  • Be an undergraduate who will have completed at least 2 years of a degree program by the time of the internship placement
  • Prove that you will maintain undergraduate status after the internship has taken place

*German citizenship holders can apply if they can prove they have been living outside of Germany for six years or more.

Selection Criteria

DAAD-RISE selection criteria include:

  • Strong academic ability (especially in STEM)
  • Research skills/experience that match the lab’s needs
  • Intercultural curiosity and sensitivity, willingness to engage with Germany/German culture

Application Materials

  • Motivation letter (cover letter) for each project you apply for (you can apply for up to 3 projects)
  • 1-2 pg. Curriculum vitae/resume
  • Official transcript
  • List of courses, as a supplement to the official transcript, you will have completed by the time the internship begins
  • Verification from the university/certificate of enrollment

    • Click “Request an enrollment verification – current student”
    • Click “Obtain an enrollment certificate”
    • Download the PDF and make sure the expected graduate date is correct. If it is incorrect, contact fellowships@osu.edu.
  • 1 letter of reference from a research mentor/professor at Ohio State in your field of study/research

Application Procedure

National Deadline: Fall 2024

You are encouraged to contact the Undergraduate Fellowship Office at fellowships@osu.edu for support on your application. However, because this is a direct-apply award, you are not required to work with our office.
